Emotional eating and mindset shifts are topics many people struggle with. It often carries a negative reputation, but it’s my belief that not all emotional connections to food are harmful. For example, the joy of dining at a beloved restaurant or celebrating with special meals can create positive feelings. And having a comfort food isn’t a bad thing! However, problems arise when eating becomes a response to negative triggers, such as stress or sadness. This episode examines these complexities and introduces ways to separate our eating from conditioned behaviors.
The cycle of emotional eating begins with an objective event, like stress at work or conflict at home. What follows is the personal story you attach to the event—your thoughts, opinions, and judgments. These thoughts create emotional responses, such as sadness, anger, or shame, which can lead to eating as a coping mechanism. Recognizing this pattern is key to breaking free of conditioned behaviors. In this episode I introduce the “O.P.E.N.” model, which highlights the power of reframing your narrative to disrupt this cycle.
At the heart of change lies the personal story you tell yourself. Rather than letting external events dictate how you feel, this episode encourages you to pause and question your thoughts. Ask yourself, “Is this true? Is this helping me?” By challenging these narratives, you can regain control over your emotional responses and make mindful choices.
True freedom comes from remaining calm and grounded despite life’s challenges. By understanding and applying the OPEN model, you can rewrite your narrative and take charge of your emotional responses. Your emotions don’t have to control you. This episode offers practical tools to help you reclaim your power and find peace in your relationship with food.
